Weight Management

At MedSurg Urgent Care, we are proud to offer a comprehensive Weight Management Program tailored to your unique health needs. Under the direct supervision of our experienced healthcare providers, our program focuses on sustainable success by emphasizing essential lifestyle modifications—including nutrition and activity—as the foundation of your journey.

To support your goals, our providers are equipped to prescribe the latest medical treatments, including GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as Wegovy or Zepbound) and effective non-GLP-1 oral medications, when clinically appropriate. Whether you are looking for medical intervention or expert guidance on healthy habits, we are here to provide a safe, supervised environment to help you achieve lasting results

What are GLP1 drugs?

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) are a class of medications primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes, obesity and sleep apnea. They work by mimicking a hormone naturally produced in your gut called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)

How do GLP1 drugs work in the body?

When you eat, your body naturally releases GLP-1 to signal fullness and manage blood sugar. GLP-1 medications amplify these signals to produce several effects:

  • Insulin Production: They prompt the pancreas to release more insulin when blood sugar levels are high.

  • Appetite Suppression: They act on the brain's satiety centers to reduce hunger and "food noise" (constant thoughts about eating).

  • Slower Digestion: They delay "gastric emptying," meaning food stays in your stomach longer, which helps you feel full for a greater period.

  • Glucagon Reduction: They suppress the release of glucagon, a hormone that normally raises blood sugar.

What are the common GLP1 drugs?

Many popular drugs belong to this class, though they are often branded differently depending on whether they are prescribed for diabetes or weight loss:

Generic Name
Brand (Diabetes)
Brand (Weight Loss)

Semaglutide

Ozempic
Wegovy

Tirzepatide*

Mounjaro
Zepbound

Liraglutide

Victoza
Saxenda

Dulaglutide

Trulicity
N/A

*Tirzepatide is a "dual agonist" that targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, often leading to greater weight loss

What are the common GLP1 drugs?

  • Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.

  • Serious (Rare): Pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, and a potential risk for certain types of thyroid cancer.

  • Lifestyle: They are intended to be used alongside diet and exercise. Most people regain a significant portion of the weight if they stop taking the medication
